How Good Are You With Numbers?
You've got your phone number, pin number, and alarm code locked in. But how good are you with numbers that 'add up' to a healthier you?
What is a healthy blood pressure?
When your blood pressure is taken, it’s expressed as a measurement with two numbers. The top number refers to the amount of pressure in your arteries during the contraction of your heart muscle. This is called systolic pressure. The bottom number refers to your blood pressure when your heart muscle is between beats. This is called diastolic pressure.
In a normal reading, your blood pressure needs to show a top number between 90 and less than 120 and a bottom number between 60 and less than 80.
If you’re in the normal range, no medical intervention is needed. However, you should maintain a healthy lifestyle and healthy weight to help prevent hypertension from developing. Regular exercise and healthy eating can also help.

What is a healthy waist-to-hip ratio? (WHR)
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a healthy WHR is:
Waist-to-hip-ratio is a quick and easy way to check how much weight you carry around your middle. It’s just one of several measures that can be used to evaluate your weight and health. Use it as a guide to talk with your health professional about whether you need to lose weight and control your disease risk factors.
To measure your WHR:
Stand up straight and breathe out. Use a tape measure to check the distance around the smallest part of your waist, just above your belly button. This is your waist circumference. Then measure the distance around the largest part of your hips — the widest part of your buttocks. This is your hip circumference.
Calculate your WHR by dividing your waist circumference by your hip circumference.
What is a healthy body mass index? (BMI)
Body mass index (BMI) is a measurement that can be used to estimate whether you are in the healthy weight range for your height. Your BMI is calculated by dividing your weight, in kilograms, by your height in metres, squared.
It’s not always accurate for everybody. It doesn’t distinguish between fat and muscle, so people who have a large muscle mass will often have a high BMI, even though their body fat is in the healthy range. Plus, a healthy BMI doesn’t always correlate with good health. While it is a good idea to know what your BMI is, no one piece of information about your weight or health should be viewed in isolation. It’s important to consider your BMI in context of other information such as blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol.
